SHIATSU with Annie Mosley In Japan Shiatsu has traditionally been practiced as a home remedy among family and friends, and for the lay person it can be a valuable way of extending support and carying to others.
Shiatsu is a gentle yet powerful healing therapy. Its origin lie in ancient Japan, where traditional masage techniques were combined with the theory of Acupuncture to produce a unique healing art based on restoring the natural, balance flow of energy within the body. Greater harmony leads not only to the relief of many specific ailiments but also gives rise to an increased level of vitality and stamina with improved mental clarity and a sense of physical and emotional well being: feeling more relaxed yet invigorated.
The techniques of Shiatsu stimulate the physiological functioning of the body improving the circulation of blood and lymph, releasing held-in- tensions in the soft tissues and organs, and increasing flexibility. As a result toxins are released, the hormonal system balanced and the immune system boosted so that the body can work more effectively to heal injuries and poor health through self repair.
Siatsu takes place on a mat at floor level , with the recipient in a variety of Lying and sitting positions. The practitioner applies presure with fingers, thumbs, elbows, knees and feet, working along with the energy chanels, or meridians of the body, tonifying areas of deficienct Ki or sedating excess Ki as appropriate. Gentle stretches as well as rocking and holding techniques are also employed. The meridians are related to and named after the vital organs of the body such as kidneys, liver, heart, lungs, stomach and so on; however they also have a wider meaning reflecting the emotional and mental condition of the whole person.
Siatsu is given in a sensitive and compassionate manner, and during a treatment deep seated blockages and anxieties may gradually be released. A transformation towards better health will usually take place, bringing greater confidence, and a more relaxed and positive attitude to handle the stress of modern living and therefore an improved quality of life.
Some of the conditions for which Siatsu is particularly effective include: Asthma, Cardio-vascular problems, headaches, migraines, general aches and pain and discomfort, digestive imbalances, arthritis, structural misalighnments/ back pain, hormonal problems, menstural irregularities - inclu. PMT, allergies, diabetes, low energy, ME, tension, Stress, anxiety, mental and emotional imbalances...etc.
A Shiatsu treatment lasts around one hour, and will include a discussion of symptoms, history, general and specific state of health. lifestyle and diet are taken into consideration in forming a picture of the complete person. The Shiatsu society has a very strict ethical code, so confidentiality is assured.
Shiatsu is applied to the fully clothed body; loose confortable clothing such as a tracksuit may be worn. No food or alcohol should be consumed three hours prior to the treatment.
ANNIE MOSLEY MRSS, Dip Nat, TFH cert, has worked with natural therapies for the last 12 years. In addition to Shiatsu, she practices Kinesiology together with Nutritional Counceling and bath flower remedies as part of a unique individual therapy based on a holistic understanding of life. Nutritional Counselling Good nutrition is the basic foundation of health. Eating a diet which includes all the appropriate and necessary energy, nutrients, vitamins and minerals can prevent, retard and heal ailments, and give a sense of well-being and better stamina. The modern concept of "healthy eating", although based on these principles, does not adress the specific needs of the individual, therefore cannot provide an ideal diet. By taking into acount metabilism, body type, lifestyle, present symptoms, cravings, medical history etc.., an appropriate diet for optimum health can be determined, respecting individual tastes and ethical and cultural choices.
Many convenience foods and 'junk' foods are widely recognized as beeing harmful, bringing a whole range of problems for most. Although low fat, low calorie, high fibre alternatives are preferable, there are many other factors in nutrition which influence the functioning of the individual or mental, emotional and physical levels.
Balancing alkaline and acid forming foods; assessing what energies or basic qualities are in foods (eg yin/yang, hot/cold, dry/damp, sweet/bitter); choosing fresh organic foods grown in season and ideally of local origin. All these factors are important when considering the wholistic aspects of nutrition.
Most of our needs for fuel and energy can be met through whole grains, pulses, nuts, seeds, fruits and vegetables, as oposed to sugar which creates a fast temporary release of energy leaving an aftermath of weakness and undernourishment. A whole food diet provides sufficient protein without relying on meat, with its associated toxins and animal fats. Apart from the sugar and protein myths, there is also a general assumption that a vegetarian diet is by definition healthy, yet some vegetarians may suffer the clogging, congesting effects of diary products and others may actually require some animal products to thrive. A nutritional consultation lasts one hour and consists of looking at lifestyle, health and diet, during which any problem areas, deficiencies etc may be assessed. An individually tailored diet based on a wholistic picture of the person's needs can then be determined to provide the optimum appropriate nutrition for better health and quality of life. The change to a new way of life often brings with it a feeling of lighness, clarity and a more stable and balanced emotional state, as well as boosting the body's own healing powers.
Allergy Testing
Allergies to foods and other substances may be identified with Kinesiology. This muscle testing technique is used to bypass the concious mind and access the body's in-built intuitive knowledge. Precise individual needs may thus be established.
